Meet Yanin
Yanin Cortes is a uniquely qualified candidate for Gwinnett County School Board. She is a former teacher and a mother, but also an entrepreneur and business leader. Yanin immigrated to the United States with her family at a young age and went through the adversity and struggle that many students and their families face in our district today.
She moved to Peachtree Corners in 2006 where she and her husband Luis have raised their three children. She graduated from Georgia State University in 2009 and began teaching at Shiloh High School in Gwinnett County.
Yanin and Luis founded Mojitos Cuban American Bistro in Norcross and have expanded their restaurant business over the past 15 years to include locations all over the North Metro Atlanta area.
Her experience in the classroom has enlightened her to the issues that our students, teachers, and faculty face on a day-to-day basis.
As a mother, she understands the concerns that all parents feel each day as they send their kids off to school.
As an entrepreneur and business leader, Yanin knows what it takes to get things done. Whether it be adjusting expenses from a budget to meet business goals, meeting financial deadlines, or working with and serving a diverse workforce and customer base, Yanin understands that it is necessary to come together to achieve success.
To achieve success for our students, we as parents, teachers, members of communities, and residents of Gwinnett County must come together for our children and provide them with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.

Safety
Providing a safe learning environment for both our students and staff is essential. We need to work together to equip our schools with the resources they need to ensure safety and security for their students and staff. As your representative for the School Board of Gwinnett County, I will work to ensure this for all students and staff through the following initiatives:
Expanding our SRO program.
Back-tracking recent Anti-discipline policies.
Community
Our goal is to have a school district that reflects the values and aspirations of its communities. In every role I’ve embraced as an educator, business leader, and mother, I have seen the value that resides in listening to our community. We must develop new pathways for communication and collaboration with the school district and our communities. The school system along with the communities, businesses, and organizations in the area must work together as a team. Our strength lies not just in our diversity but in our ability to come together to reach a common goal. We will achieve this through the following initiatives
Establish and build relationships between the School Board and local organizations
Develop relationships with local businesses and leaders
Community
